Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering

Since: 1998

The Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering of MCET is committed to offer teaching of the highest quality. The Department was started in 1998 with the introduction of the undergraduate programme (B.Tech) in Electronics & Communication Engineering(ECE) affiliated to Kalyani University. Initially, the approved intake capacity was 40 and in the Teaching Quality Assessments of AICTE, the intake now has been increased to 60. From its inception, the Department recognizes that its staff are its key resource and, as such, all staff are encouraged to take part in academic and professional development activities throughout the year. This is why the Department is rated as one of the top five ECE Departments under the WBUT. The first batch of students with B.Tech in ECE passed out in 2002 and it is a matter of great pride that Samiul Haque of our Department stood First Class First in the University.

Vision
  • To develop the department as a centre of excellence to produce high quality, self motivated, creative and ethical engineers and technologists to serve the nation.

Mission
  • To provide high quality engineering education & ethics to students.

  • To ensure maximum knowledge transfer to students by adopting better pedagogical teaching methods.

  • To create a lively learning atmosphere by continuous teacher & student interaction.

  • To provide better facilities, infrastructure & environment to our students for their technical education.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)
  • To produce engineering graduates who would have developed a adequate knowledge in mathematics and basic science and capable to deploy these tools in their specialized fields.

  • To produce engineering graduates who would be able to demonstrate technical knowhow in the field of electronics and communication engineering and provide accurate solutions to the underlying problems.

  • To produce graduate students who would attain professional excellence through life-long learning such as advanced degrees and other professional activities.

  • To produce graduates who can work individually in a trans-disciplinary environment effectively.

  • To produce graduates who would be able to take responsibility and to work as a part of a team towards the fulfillment of both individual and organizational interest.

Programme Outcomes (POs)

Upon successful completion of the programme, the students would have the following attributes:

  • An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering.

  • Shall be able to use necessary methodologies, hardware and software tools for state-of-the-art engineering applications.

  • Shall be able to analyze problems and implement effectively.

  • Should have ability to design system(s) to meet the social needs.

  • Shall be able to communicate effectively.

  • An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.

  • An ability to engage himself in life-long learning.

  • Should have knowledge of current issues.

Programme Schedule

The academic programme at the department offers 4-year graduate level program in Electronics and Communication Engineering. The academic year is divided into two semesters each of six months; the first semester begins in July-August and the second in January. The programme is taught in a batch with strength of 60 students. Faculty at the department uses multiple teaching methods, namely, in-class learning through lectures, assignments and tutorials. Students are divided in groups of 20-30 for tutorial classes. Students are required to take assignments and submit them to the teachers for timely evaluation.

Laboratories

Practical learning equips students with the aptitude to effectively work in groups of 3-4 with hands-on experiments. The department has well equipped and well stocked laboratories with power back-up systems. Additionally, we have taken initiative in updating the laboratories meeting the demands of the present-day scenario. The department has also its computer laboratory.

Specialization Courses

The course is divided into core and specialization course spread over 4 years. The first 6 semesters cover the core courses. The students are required to choose their three elective papers at the 7th and 8th semesters in addition to the core courses.

Projects & Dissertation

Students are required to take up a project assignment at the beginning of the 7th semester and will carry on till the end of the 8th semester. The distribution of projects to the students is monitored by the faculty in a manner that emphasizes individual taste, talent and genius and of course, with an eye on current industry trends and professional demands. Students are encouraged to attend Engineering Fairs and Work-shops to present their project works before the Evaluation Committee consisting of the internal/ external experts.

Guest Lecturers

The department holds one day seminar at regular intervals for which we invite leaders from academia/ industries to participate. This helps our students to share their thoughts with the experts and to acquaint them with the state-of- art activities in the field of interests.

Summer Trainning & Industrial Tour

Although not compulsory, students are encouraged to participate in summer training offered by the reputed companies at the end of the 3rd year. This provides students with an insight into the present day industrial scenario and job markets. The institute organizes trip to visit various reputed industries and R&D centers for the final year students, aiming to update themselves with latest activities and experimental issues.
