Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering
Since: 1998
The Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering of MCET is committed to offer teaching of the highest quality. The Department was started in 1998 with the introduction of the undergraduate programme (B.Tech) in Electronics & Communication Engineering(ECE) affiliated to Kalyani University. Initially, the approved intake capacity was 40 and in the Teaching Quality Assessments of AICTE, the intake now has been increased to 60. From its inception, the Department recognizes that its staff are its key resource and, as such, all staff are encouraged to take part in academic and professional development activities throughout the year. This is why the Department is rated as one of the top five ECE Departments under the WBUT. The first batch of students with B.Tech in ECE passed out in 2002 and it is a matter of great pride that Samiul Haque of our Department stood First Class First in the University.
Upon successful completion of the programme, the students would have the following attributes:
The academic programme at the department offers 4-year graduate level program in Electronics and Communication Engineering. The academic year is divided into two semesters each of six months; the first semester begins in July-August and the second in January. The programme is taught in a batch with strength of 60 students. Faculty at the department uses multiple teaching methods, namely, in-class learning through lectures, assignments and tutorials. Students are divided in groups of 20-30 for tutorial classes. Students are required to take assignments and submit them to the teachers for timely evaluation.
Practical learning equips students with the aptitude to effectively work in groups of 3-4 with hands-on experiments. The department has well equipped and well stocked laboratories with power back-up systems. Additionally, we have taken initiative in updating the laboratories meeting the demands of the present-day scenario. The department has also its computer laboratory.
The course is divided into core and specialization course spread over 4 years. The first 6 semesters cover the core courses. The students are required to choose their three elective papers at the 7th and 8th semesters in addition to the core courses.
Students are required to take up a project assignment at the beginning of the 7th semester and will carry on till the end of the 8th semester. The distribution of projects to the students is monitored by the faculty in a manner that emphasizes individual taste, talent and genius and of course, with an eye on current industry trends and professional demands. Students are encouraged to attend Engineering Fairs and Work-shops to present their project works before the Evaluation Committee consisting of the internal/ external experts.
The department holds one day seminar at regular intervals for which we invite leaders from academia/ industries to participate. This helps our students to share their thoughts with the experts and to acquaint them with the state-of- art activities in the field of interests.
Although not compulsory, students are encouraged to participate in summer training offered by the reputed companies at the end of the 3rd year. This provides students with an insight into the present day industrial scenario and job markets. The institute organizes trip to visit various reputed industries and R&D centers for the final year students, aiming to update themselves with latest activities and experimental issues.
