Information technology (IT) is "the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware". IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and securely retrieve information.

Today, the term information has ballooned to encompass many aspects of computing and technology, and the term has become very recognizable. IT professionals perform a variety of duties that range from installing applications to designing complex computer networks and information databases. A few of the duties that IT professionals perform may include data management, networking, engineering computer hardware, database and software design, as well as the management and administration of entire systems. Information technology is starting to spread farther than the conventional personal computer and network technology, and more into integrations of other technologies such as the use of cell phones, televisions, automobiles, and more, which is increasing the demand for such jobs.

When computer and communications technologies are combined, the result is information technology, or "infotech". Information technology is a general term that describes any technology that helps to produce, manipulate, store, communicate, and/or disseminate information.

The department of Information Technology was started in the year 2000 and affiliated to West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT) and approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. The academic programme at this department offers 4 years graduates level programme in Information Technology with an annual intake of 60 students.

TEQIP Phase-II , a World Bank Project financially helps IT department to improve the Quality of the Technical Education through infrastructure development (Hard Component)of Lab , Class Rooms and Quality improvement(Soft Component) of the Students , Teachers & Technical staffs through Seminar , Workshop , Industry-Institute-Interaction Program etc to achieve the vision & mission of our department .

Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)
  • Engineering Ethics:

    To accept the challenges and responsibilities in making decisions through the ethical , physical, analytical and computational approaches of IT in widely diversified domains of industry , government and academia , abstracting essential structure through understanding of technology and its appropriate application, recognizing sources of uncertainty , applying appropriate models and technical tools , and evaluating the way to develop their solutions , maintaining and improving technical competence in the field of programming and their core subjects.

  • Leadership:

    To inspire and motivates our students to be self-confident about their careers through integrity and technical strengths that drive innovation as well as to inspire and guide a groups they work with in bringing their ideas to fruition and mentoring that can be expressed through powerful, persuasive speech or through decisive action. The graduates will be professional in the development of software, hardware and real life applications which helps to take a leadership at the time of placement and at the industry. The leadership development will be provided through their personality development, soft skill development, communication skills , social awareness.

  • Versatility:

    To develop abilities and talents leading to creativity and productivity in fields and professions beyond the regular IT curriculum. To make our students and teachers more versatile well equipped laboratories , equipments , libraries , WiFi are provided . Students and teachers are encouraged to participate and to organize Workshop , Seminars , Conferences beyond their course curriculum.

    To stimulate lifelong self learning abilities to remain professionally potent to cope up with any environment and to help the society at their level best. To provide the opportunities to involve in social activities and to explore their talents in co-curricular and extracurricular activities as well as to improve academic performance of weak students . The opportunities obtained through academic & nonacademic reforms.

    To enhance and enrich our department the students are provided technically sound faculties , standard infrastructure , learning resources are provided to gain intradisciplinary & interdisciplinary knowledge through projects , industrial training and internship to reputed institutions , leading to a sustainable competitive edge in industry, professional career and R&D to meet societal needs as well as to produce the opportunities in terms of employability.

    To adopt group work and team management skills with crosscultural courtesy, promoting knowledge transfer leading to conceptualization and delivery of projects with variety of domains. To learn group works the students are provided different group activities in terms of Project Work , Team Game and by other means.

    To prepare our students to be open minded and disciplined at their daily activities as well as to prepare our students to be careful about their attitudes towards their juniors , seniors and faculties along with other staffs .To prepare our students to cope up with different social relevance and other international cultures and to introduce them to professional ethics and practice.

Programme Duration & Structure

The department offers four year graduate level programme in IT , preparing the students for obtaining their degree in B.Tech(IT) following the curriculum prescribed by the West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT) . The degree is approved by All India Council of Technical Education(AICTE) , New Delhi . An academic year is divided into two semesters. The academic duration covers eight semesters each of six months . The odd semester begins in July and the even semester begins in January with a mid-semesters break in June.

Seminars, Research Activities, Professional AND Vocational Trainning

Regular Technical seminars are arranged by the department in which academicians, professional executives of private and Govt. institutions / industries and students also take part. This provides a platform for academic discussions and students are able to get the idea of latest trends and developments in industries and academic institutions. Students are also encouraged to take part actively and deliver lectures on the latest innovative technologies.

The faculty members are involved in various research works in the field of Bio-Informatics, Clustering, Steganography, GIS based on QUAD TREE segmentation etc and attend several National and International conferences for the research paper presentation.

Industrial Training is arranged for all the third year students after their sixth semester examination in reputed industries. All students are required to submit their training report and deliver a seminar on the industrial training.

Our collection of ideas and abstracts for final year project work are compiled by experts in different renowned universities. A dedicated team of faculty members are involved to find out more and more new projects related to computer science and information technology so that we capture the latest technology trends in the industry and create projects based on that.

Infrastructures & Facilities

The department has equipped and fully developed programming laboratories with Wi-fi internet facilities round the clock. The students are provided with the modern desktop computer terminals with IntelR Core i3 processor installed with licensed system softwares, and application softwares for database design and development, data structures programming, network programming, Object-oriented programming, systems programming and administration, Multimedia and computer graphics application development. The laboratories are fully equipped with laserjet printers, scanners, networking peripherals, dedicated dual operating (Windows & Linux)Online Uninterrupted power Supply(UPS) has been installed in the laboratories for power back-up of the computing equipments. Interactive teaching aids are available in the laboratories and classrooms to facilitate the teaching-learning process.The department has four spacious and airy lecture rooms to accommodate around sixty seats for theoretical deliberations. The text and reference books of the course curriculum needed for the undergraduate programme are stocked in adequate quantity in central and departmental library for issuing to the learners on demand. The lectures, practicals and tutorials are conducted by dedicated group of well-qualified and experienced faculty and technical staffs.


A 2-Days Seminar titled "Soft Computing and Image Processing" was organized by the department which was chaired by eminent speakers of both academic and industrial fields.
